These submarines were initially ordered by South Africa, but that sale was cancelled in 1977 due to a United Nations arms embargo. The uncompleted hulls were sold to Pakistan in November 1978. The units are of the same design as the French AGOSTA 70 class. HULL: These double-hull submarines are known for their quiet operation and large battery capacity, which at 320 cells is twice that of Pakistan's retired HANGOR-class (French DAPHNE design) boats.
