These are advanced torpedo attack submarines. In May 1987, the Australian navy ordered six submarines of the Type 471 design from Kockums Shipyard of Malmo, Sweden. The boats were built in Australia by the Australian Submarine Corp. (ASC), a consortium of Kockums, and the Australian Industry Development Corp., or AIDC.
