The HOUXIN class was introduced to replace the obsolete HOUKU and HUANGFENG classes in the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN).

There are some variations in the bridge superstructure in later ships of the class.

Sixteen remain in Chinese service, divided between the East and South Sea Fleets.
