The class is believed to be a larger version of the Shanghai-I** and Shanghai-II** classes. Vessels of this class differ from the Shanghai-II** class by incorporating more powerful diesel engines and power-operated 37-mm mounts. This class is sometimes referred to as the SHANGHAI-III class. The cla ss has been in production since 1992.
