These ships were built to replace the TON-class minehunters (MHC). Originally, there were plans to build 20 of this class. They are designed for minehunting and removal only and are not equipped for minesweeping. They are equipped with two PAP 104 Mk 2 remote-controlled underwater mine-disposal systems and have facilities for a mine-disposal diver team.
