These multi-purpose ships perform anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-air and anti-ship escort duties. They were the first major class of surface combatants designed and built in Canada since the IROQUOIS (TRIBAL) class destroyers of the early 1970s. The first six were ordered on July 29, 1983, and the second six on Dec. 18, 1987. HULL: The flush-deck design has a sharply raked bow and a high bow knuckle extending aft to abreast of the mast.
