The LUYANG III-class (Type 052D) destroyers are considered a follow-on to China's LUYANG II-class (Type 052C) destroyers (see separate record). The destroyers have been described as similar to the U.S. ARLEIGH BURKE class. The design has been succeeded by the lengthened ZIBO-class (Type 052DL) derived from the LUYANG III class.
