This class represents the first Chinese surface combatant with a true air defense capability. Based on the same hull as the LUYANG-I -class (Type 52B), this class is equipped with a U.S. Aegis (SPY-1)-style phased array radar and the HQ-9 VLS system, as well as being armed with the latest YJ-62 (C-602) anti-ship cruise missile.
