The KWANGGAETO-DAEWANG class is the first of a group of three classes of multi-role surface combatants designed to replace aging U.S. GEARING-class destroyers. Originally projected at 17-20 units, the program was later scaled back to the three units described here, six larger KDX-II class ships and three (or possibly six) Aegis -equipped DDG-class ships.
