These German-built ships are officially classified as destroyers by the Argentinean navy. The original order, dated Dec. 11, 1978, was for a class of six ships, but this was reduced to four ships when six units of the smaller MEKO 140 design were ordered (see ESPORA class database entry). As with all MEKO ships, this class has modular weapons and electronics for ease of modernization and repair.
