This ship replaced the uncompleted conversion of the former Lloyd Brasileiro Steamship Co. tanker M/V ITATAINGA; plans also called for the tanker to be named ALMIRANTE GASTAO MOTTA (G-29). The ITATINGA was sold in 1987 as a replacement for MARAJO (G-27).
