The remaining active units were all built in Japan and closely resemble a U.S. Navy design (BuShips numbers LCVP-8510/LCVP-8860).

The first four units (since stricken) were built in Brazil in 1978/1979; the others were built in Japan in the early 1990s (with the first two of these being launched on Sept. 12, 1993). A total of 32 units were built, including 28 in a Japanese shipyard.
