These craft were ordered in 1999 as part of a contract for three new Type 214 submarines. The first six were completed by 2000. Twelve more are in various stages of construction. They will replace former ex-U.S. landing craft, vehicle, personnel (LCVPs) transferred between 1956 and 1971.

The first six are in active service. They are carried by JASON-class LSTs (landing ships, tank).
