The first two ships of the class were ordered in December 2000 as a replacement for the logistics landing ships RFA SIR PERCIVALE and RFA SIR GERAINT. A second pair was ordered on Nov. 19, 2001, to replace RFA SIR GALAHAD and RFA SIR TRISTAM. The ships are expected to greatly enhance the amphibious capability of the Royal Navy.
