The SHANDONG (Type 001A) is China's first domestically built aircraft carrier. It is a development of the LIAONING class, China's first aircraft carrier, which is based on a former Soviet vessel (see separate record). The carrier is named after the province in eastern China. HULL: The SHANDONG is somewhat larger than the LIAONING and employs a similar short takeoff but arrested recovery (STOBAR) system, including a ski jump forward, to launch and recover aircraft.
