The SSQ-801 is a standard A-size passive sonobuoy dropped as part of the Barra anti-submarine warfare (ASW) system. It can be air-dropped from a variety of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. Barras in British service are designated SSQ-981. Upon contact with seawater, the Barra separates into two connected parts: An upper floating portion holding the radio transmitter and a lower part holding the acoustic sensor array.
