The AN/SQS-509 is a lower-frequency version of the AN/SQS-505 active search and attack sonar (see separate database entry). Besides operating at a lower frequency, the power output is also increased. Otherwise, the SQS-509 has the same operating characteristics and capabilities as the SQS-505.

Initial operational capability (IOC) was reached in 1986. The system is n service.
