Asr

Country of Origin: Iran

Asr is an Iranian passive electronically-scanned array (PESA), three-dimensional, air and sea surface search radar designed for installation on surface ships or shore-based facilities. It is reportedly the first solid-state 3D radar developed indigenously within Iran.

According to information from government and government-affiliated sources, this radar is capable of detecting aerial threats such as cruise missiles and low-flying aircraft as well as ships and small boats. 100 targets can be tracked simultaneously at distances up to 110 nm (200.0 km).

The Asr can detect targets with a radar cross section of 43 sq ft (4.0 m2).

The system provides elevation information with range and azimuth and is reportedly protected against anti-radar missiles.

According to the state-owned Tasnim news agency, the Asr naval radar is Iran's first indigenously designed and produced three-dimensional phased array radar. The Asr program is believed to have been initiated in the early 1990s.

Iran's government-owned Mehr news agency reported on Sept. 4, 2013, that the Asr would soon be installed on an Iranian warship.

On Sept. 13, 2013, the military-affiliated Fars News outlet, quoting navy leadership, reported that the radar was undergoing two months of testing in the Gulf of Aden aboard the corvette JAMARAN.

On Nov. 27, 2013, at a ceremony in Tehran, the Iranian navy formally unveiled the radar, in advance of the country's Nov. 28 National Day celebration according to Tasnim.

Iranian navy leaders stated through Tasnim on Nov. 24, 2014, that the service was about to receive the Asr radar, likely indicating the end of testing and the beginning of the system's rollout.

Asr radars have been equipped to the JAMARAN class of corvettes. It is currently unknown if the radar has been installed on other surface ships in the Iranian navy.
