The J/APG-2 is an upgraded variant of the J/APG-1 active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar developed for Japan's F-2 fighter jets. It was designed to complement the new AAM-4B air-to-air missile by enabling target detection at long ranges.

The J/APG-2 takes advantage of new gallium-nitride (GaN) technology for its transmit/receive modules. This increases beam power by 300 percent and range to 75 mi (120 km).
