These 16-in (406-mm) torpedoes are anti-submarine weapons that can be launched from small anti-submarine warfare (ASW) craft and from stern tubes in several submarine classes.

Torpedoes of this size are also carried by ASW fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. They are also the warhead for the surface-launched SS-N-14 Silex and the submarine-launched SS-N-16 ASW missiles.
