The Mao series of naval mines began as Chinese variants of Soviet moored contact mines.
Mao-1 large moored mines, equipped with contact fuzes, entered production in 1962 after being evaluated by the Chinese navy.
The Mao-2 is a medium moored mine, with a contact fuze, based on the Soviet KSM mine. It is carried by surface vessels and designed to block enemy ports and sea routes. It entered production in 1965.
