The EM-56 is a self-propelled mine designed to travel autonomously to its target area.

This mine, and others similar to it, typically utilize obsolete torpedo bodies and are launched from submarines. They travel along a pre-determined course for a set period of time. Once they arrive at the target area, the torpedo engine shuts off and the mine sinks to the bottom, where the warhead is controlled by a fuze and operates like any standard bottom mine.
