This rising mine was designed for use in deep water on the continental shelf as an ASW barrier mine. It was similar in concept to the Anglo-U.S. Crusader/Hammerhead.
This mine was laid tethered to the sea floor and activated by a passive acoustic sensor. The mine was launched when its active sensor placed the target within the mine's vertical attack zone. Its tether would be severed and the mine boosted toward the target, probably unguided, by a rocket motor.
