The BM-13-16 multiple rocket launcher (MRL) first entered service soon after the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 and quickly acquired the nicknames "Katyusha" and "Stalin Organ." The rocket launcher is one of the oldest weapon systems still in use.

Unlike most MRLs, which have tube launchers, the BM-13-16 has a row of eight rails with rockets mounted above and below each rail.
