The SS-N-5 was the former Soviet navy's second-generation submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM), featuring underwater launch and a greater range compared to the earlier SS-N-4 . The SS-N-5 replaced the SS-N-4 in 13 of the Golf**-class diesel-electric submarines and all eight of the nuclear-pro pelled Hotel**-class submarines.
