The SS-23 Spider was a mobile, nuclear-capable short-range ballistic missile in service with the Soviet Union and other Warsaw Pact countries. Before the 1987 INF Treaty, the Spider was intended to replace the SS-1C Scud B at the front and army levels of the Soviet military.
The missile was a thick cylinder with a tapered inter-stage collar joining it to a pointed re-entry vehicle.
