The SSM-1, or Type 88, is a ground-launched, coastal defense missile that is based on the ASM-1 (Type 80) air-launched missile. The SSM-1 is physically identical to the ASM-1, but is a turbojet-powered cruise missile that has terrain-avoidance capabilities.

The missile is a thick cylinder with a blunt nose and a cruciform delta wing that is indexed in line with cruciform tail fins.
