The CSS-C-5 Saples was a shore-based, supersonic, anti-ship missile similar in configuration to the British Bloodhound SAM. It could also be launched from air and ship platforms.

The requirements of high speed and long range resulted in a large missile with two rocket boosters and two ramjet cruise engines.
