Type 03 medium-range surface-to-air missile

The Type 03 medium-range surface-to-air missile system was designed as a replacement for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force's Hawk air defense systems. The missile is capable of defeating aircraft, cruise missiles and short-range tactical ballistic missile threats.

It provides air defense coverage for GSDF operation areas. Ship-based systems may be under development. Some elements of the Patriot system were incorporated into the design of the Type 03.
