The AIM-132 advanced short-range air-to-air missile (ASRAAM) is an air-to-air weapon that was originally intended to replace the U.S.-designed AIM-9 Sidewinder .
The baseline design is smaller and lighter than the Sidewinder . Its advantages over the Sidewinder are improved maneuverability, double the seeker range, multi-target discrimination, faster acceleration and flight speeds, an imaging infrared (IIR) seeker and an active IR fuze with a smaller miss distance.
