The ATM-7 is a relatively simple side-attack anti-tank mine. The Misznay Schardin warhead, which consists of explosives packed behind a heavy plate, is mounted on a stand to aid in aiming.
When the mine is detonated, the plate is formed into a slug and propelled toward the target by the explosives. The mine originally used either a breakwire, infrared fuze or command detonation. Only command-initiated detonation is permitted under current Austrian law.
