The Russian anti-tank dog mine made its appearance during World War II and can be regarded as the first wide-area mine. The mine itself consisted of approximately 26 lb (12 kg) of TNT carried in two canvas pouches, one strapped on each side of a dog.

The ignition device was a standard MUV pull-fuze inserted in a 7 oz (200-g) block of TNT. This makeshift booster was connected to the two main charges by lengths of detonating cord. A spring-loaded wooden lever, projecting vertically...
