The Zulfiqar is a domestically produced Iranian main battle tank that was first shown to the public in 1994. It is named after the sword of Shia leader Hazrat Ali. Observers have variously speculated that the Zulfiqar incorporated American (such as M-48A5 and M-60A1) or Russian tank elements into its design. By 1999, the Iranian government demonstrated "third-generation" Zulfiqars to the public.
