The Type 85 main battle tank (MBT) represented a significant change in Chinese tank design, moving away from the Type 59 model (which was based on the Russian T-54).

The design features a streamlined hull with a welded turret. This was the first Chinese tank able to engage targets while it was in motion. It is designated the Type 88C in Chinese service.
