The T-72 -- also called "Ural" -- is a main battle tank (MBT) in service with Russia and several other countries. It was hurried into service to provide a platform for the Soviet 125-mm tank gun when the earlier and more radical T-64 proved unreliable. Its combination of proven platform (hull, running gear and engine) and powerful main armament resulted in a production run of thousands of tanks and substantial exports.
