The Arjun was designed by India's Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) to be an indigenously designed and manufactured main battle tank (MBT). However, the project, started in 1974, took more than 10 years to deliver the first prototype. The tank was eventually designated as suitable only for use in training due to its weight. The design has been improved and is in service with the Indian army.
