The GMZ-3 (Gusenichniy Minniy Zagraditel) track minelayer is designed to lay, arm and mask anti-tank and other mines, either in the emplacement of planned minefields along expected avenues of approach or rapid deployment to repel an imminent attack.

The vehicle is based on the chassis of the SA-4 Ganef** surface-to-air missile system (see separate record).
