The WZ 551 6 x 6 armored personnel carrier (APC) resembles the French VAB 6 x 6 (see separate record). The Chinese vehicle is longer, wider and heavier, among other differences.

The WZ 551 was developed in parallel with the fully tracked Type 85 (see separate record) and shares the engine and most of the armament options (see "Variants," below). The Chinese manufacturer, NORINCO, has also developed 4 x 4 and 8 x 8 variants.
