The Type 89 MICV was developed to replace the Type 60 armored personnel carrier (APC) and serve as a supplement to the Type 73 APC.
The Type 89 has an all-welded aluminum hull with the engine at the front left side and the driver on the right. The engine is a 600-hp water-cooled diesel.
The troop compartment is at the rear of the hull; it has two roof hatches and holds seven infantrymen.
