This was a small, lightweight gun for use in rough terrain that could be taken apart for pack transport. The M1966 had a split trail/shield and a carriage placement comparable to the one employed by the Italian Oto Melara Model 56 pack howitzer.
The short barrel had no muzzle brake and reciprocated in a square cross-section slipper. The breech was a horizontal sliding wedge opening to the right. Panoramic and direct-fire optical sights were located to the left of the barrel.
