The 152-mm M1976 (Russian: 2A36) field gun began entering service in the early 1980s as a replacement for the 130-mm M-46 gun at all levels of the Soviet ground forces.
It is a long-barreled weapon with a multi-slotted, 311-lb (141-kg) muzzle brake. The three-cylinder recoil system is grouped under a gabled shield over the barrel; to either side of the recoil system is a shield wing.
