The 2A61 is a light towed howitzer developed from the 122-mm D-30A (also known as the 2A18M) howitzer. The carriage has been modified to accept the larger 152-mm gun barrel.
The ordnance is fitted with a large double "T" multi-baffle muzzle brake, with the towing eye located below it. The gun is also equipped with a semi-automatic projectile rammer, although charges are loaded manually.
