The ZPU-4 14.5-mm anti-aircraft (AA) gun consists of four Model KPV machine guns mounted on a four-wheel carriage. In the firing position, the wheels are raised off the ground and supported by four stabilizing jacks.

The ZPU-4 fires three types of ammunition: incendiary tracer (IT), armor-piercing incendiary (API) and armor-piercing incendiary tracer (APIT).
