The ZPU-1 consists of a single KPV machine gun mounted on a two-wheel carriage. When traveling over rough terrain, the ZPU-1 can be dismantled into units weighing about 176 lb (80 kg) each.

In the firing position, the wheels are raised and the gun mount rests on the ground.

The ZPU-1 fires armor-piercing incendiary tracer (APIT), armor-piercing incendiary (API) and incendiary tracer (IT) ammunition.
