The Chinese 122-mm Type 96 towed howitzer is based on the Russian D-30 weapon system. It is almost identical to the Russian model, but with minor changes likely to meet local manufacturing requirements.

The howitzer is equipped with a Type PG-1M panoramic sight with a magnification of 4x and a 10-degree field of view; Type OP4M telescopic sight with a magnification of 5.5x and 11-degree field of view; and a Type K-1 indicator with a 10-degree field of view.
