The KH178 105-mm howitzer was developed based on the German Rheinmetall conversion of the U.S. M101 howitzer and the British 105-mm light gun. As a result, the KH178 uses a barrel similar to the one developed to enable the British Light Gun to fire American-made U.S. M101 ammunition.
The barrel uses progressive-twist rifling, going from 1 in 35 to 1 in 18, and is fitted with a double-baffle muzzle brake.
