The 155-mm Type 99 self-propelled howitzer was developed as a replacement for the earlier Type 75 self-propelled gun. It was developed by the Japanese Defense Agency Technical Research Division and built by Japan Steel Works and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. The vehicle measures 40 ft (12.2 m) long, 10 ft 6 in (3.2 m) wide and 14 ft 1 in (4.3 m) tall and has a combat weight of 88,180 lb (40,000 kg).
