The Giatsint (Hyacinth) is the self-propelled carriage that carries the 152-mm 2A36 field gun. Although not much heavier than the 2S3 Akatsiya it was intended to replace, its gun is more powerful and has a longer range. It resembles the U.S. M107/M110 series in its lack of protection for the gun crew while in action.

The hull of the 2S5 is of all-welded steel armor, providing protection against small arms and shell splinters.
