The 122-mm Type 89 self-propelled howitzer was developed in the 1980s for the Chinese People's Liberation Army. It is primarily intended to provide medium- to long-range indirect fire support for infantry and armored formations. The howitzer is also known by its industrial designation, PLZ-89.
The hull and turret of the vehicle are constructed from all-welded aluminum armor, which protects occupants against small-arms fire and shell splinters.
