The SM-240 240-mm mortar, also known as 2S4 in Russia as well as the Tyulpan (Tulip Tree), is a breech-loaded, trigger-fired, high-trajectory weapon. It is the largest caliber tube-launched projectile weapon in service with any country.
Compared to a howitzer of similar caliber, the mortar is much lighter, has a lower muzzle velocity and a lower range. The bomb is often heavier, but much less accurate than a howitzer projectile.
